General Information


The Annual Fall Meeting of the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society will be held 23-26 October 2008 (Thursday-Sunday) at the Marriott City Center Hotel and Conference Center in Oakland, California. Three associated half-day topical workshops will be held on Thursday morning, 23 October 2008.

Venue
Founded in 1852, Oakland, California has history that goes back much further than its 150 years. Native Americans lived in the region for over 5,000 years. The Spanish visited the area in the 1770's, and came to settle about 50 years later. Asians, African Americans, and those of Northern European extraction came with the Gold Rush, and put down their own roots. Today, Oakland is one of the nation's most ethnically integrated cities, Oaklanders speak more than 100 languages and dialects.

Oakland's landscape is a picturesque mix of lovely hillside neighborhoods; exciting and diverse architecture; a bustling waterfront; two shimmering lakes; 19 miles of shoreline along the San Francisco Bay; unparalleled Bay views; and more parks and open space per capita than any other city in the Bay Area. A city on the move, Oakland has emerged as a major economic force in the region. Long a center for international trade, the Port of Oakland is the fourth busiest container port in the United States.

The biggest tourist attraction in the region is the city of San Francisco. Consistently ranked as one of the world's favorite cities to visit, San Francisco is the world-famous city by the bay and home to many iconic images such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Transamerica Building, Alcatraz Island, as well as Chinatown, cable cars, and the famous zigzagging Lombard Street. San Francisco is also famous for the Fisherman's Wharf, the Castro District, Market Street and the Coit Tower.

San Francisco was founded in 1776 by Spanish settlers who named the city after St. Francis. The city remained relatively small until the boom period from the start of the 1848 California Gold Rush until 1906, when the city was struck by a massive earthquake. As a result of the earthquake, in 1906 much of the city was destroyed by fire, but since that time San Francisco has become one of the country's biggest centers for commerce, trade, shipping, and culture.

All of the attractions of the SF Bay area and Napa Valley are readily available by rental car or BART. The BART station is only one block from the front door of the conference hotel.

Transportation & Weather
Oakland is served by the Oakland International Airport (about 15 minutes from the hotel), the San Francisco International Airport (45 minutes away) and from the San Jose Airport (60 minutes away). Several low-cost airlines fly into Oakland while all of the major airlines serve SFO. Information concerning ground transportation is located on the Travel link. Oakland is home to a moderate climate. The summer months in Oakland, from July to October, feature typically dry, warm and sunny weather so you can expect clear skies and comfortable weather (but it never hurts to bring an umbrella). Evening temperatures in October may drop into the 50s, while daytime temperatures will generally be near 70 degrees (F).

Hotel
All conference meetings and sessions will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. A block of rooms has been reserved for meeting participants at a rate of $125 plus tax. In order to receive the reduced room rate, you should not contact the hotel directly. Information on making hotel reservations is located on the Lodging link. Hotel reservations should be made before 23 September 2008 in order to receive the discount.

Registration
Conference registration is available through the Registration link on the conference home page.

Those desiring to receive a printed copy of the Bulletin of the American Physical Society (BAPS) prior to the meeting should register before the early registration cut-off date, check the appropriate box on the registration form, and provide a U.S. postal address. The BAPS will be sent by Priority Mail.

A banquet will be held at the Marriott on Saturday evening. Tickets will be available through the conference registration link for an additional $55 fee.

Meeting Structure
The meeting will start on Thursday, 23 October 2008. In order to obtain lower room rates, the workshops will be held on Thursday morning and the plenary session for the main meeting will be held on Thursday afternoon. The traditional parallel invited sessions, mini-symposia and contributed paper sessions will fill the schedule on Friday and continue through Sunday at Noon.

The meeting format is a pattern shift compared to previous DNP Fall meetings. At the Oakland meeting, we will use the 'APS Spring meeting' format with two sessions in the morning and two sessions in the afternoon. Each session will be two hours long and can accommodate three invited talks or ten contributed talks.

Workshops
The workshops will be held in parallel on Thursday morning, 23 October 2008. The workshops will be four hours long, split into two sessions with a coffee break between sessions. More information on these workshops is included on the Workshops link.

Satellite Meetings
It is expected that a number of User's Group meetings and other satellite meetings will occur in conjunction with the DNP meeting. User's Groups are encouraged to hold their meetings on Friday evening. Please contact the conference organizers at dnp08@lbl.gov and the conference coordinators at info@cccmeetings.com in order to make arrangements for these meetings. The deadline for arranging satellite meetings is 29 August 2008.

Abstracts
The deadline for the electronic submission of abstracts is 1 July 2008. The meeting ID is DNP08. Instructions are available on the meeting homepage under the Abstract Submission link.

Only electronic submission of abstracts is permitted and the lead author on the abstract is assumed to be the presenter. APS rules no longer permit the same lead author on more than one abstract.
